Perfectly Imperfect

Exhibition by Celeste C. da Luz
Part of HOP Projects CT20 2019 Artist Residency Programme

Exhibition Opening: Friday 29 Nov 2019

Focusing on the central preoccupation of colour, materiality and engagement, Celeste creates work to depict an understanding of her surroundings through her sense of place. Employing material that aims to go beyond the recognisable connotations of itself, and to reveal the unknown within the familiar, her work questions and challenges the hierarchy of objects that exist around us. Considering her work and the viewers as a dialogue, she invites and encourages the viewers to encounter, to ponder and to make a subjective contribution.

Her latest work 6 x 6 Stories (2019) and 4 x 4 Stories (2019) reflected her interpretation of her surroundings during her residency in Folkestone. She collected stones found on the beach in Folkestone and had them partly coated with paint, exposing the contradiction between colour, form and material. Her use of mirror surface between the objects intends to capture the ambivalence that people feel about aspects of their personal identity, narrating the distance between the way that the viewers see themselves and the way others see them.
